Physical Unfitness has a Price

Physical fitness remains one of the key aspects of maintaining lifelong health. Its profound impact on cardiovascular health has also been noted. A recent study has also found physical unfitness to be a primary cause of chronic health issues later in life.

Recent Studies

A recent study published in ‘Annals of Internal Medicine’ analyzed data from 1,079,128 males who joined the armed forces in the period between 1972 and 1994. All the members were aged between 16 and 19 years during their induction into the military. Their cardiorespiratory fitness and body mass index or BMI were taken as reference points. Years later, it was measured against the receipt of disability pensions from the government.

The study found that a little over 5 percent of the group were eligible for the disability pension. Low cardiorespiratory fitness was a common underlying factor in all the recipients. Although other ailments including nervous, musculoskeletal, psychiatric and circulatory problems were diagnosed, the issue of cardiorespiratory fitness could not be overlooked. Similarly, obesity was also common among people who received disability pensions.

When compared to another sample of people, who joined the armed forces at the same time and had high to moderate fitness levels, disability claims were considerably reduced among them.

Regular Physical Activity Prevents Diseases

The American Heart Association (AHA) blames sedentary lifestyle choices and lack of physical activity as one of the major risk factors associated with poor cardiovascular health. Regular exercise can reverse these problems to a large extent. It not only lowers high blood pressure, but it also keeps cholesterol levels under control and increases insulin sensitivity in diabetes patients. The risk of obesity is also curtailed to a large extent. When combined with a healthy diet, regular exercise can prove to be extremely beneficial.

Multiple Benefits of Physical Fitness

Physically unfit people are often diagnosed with multiple health issues. But, people who adhere to a regular fitness routine, reduce the risk of diseases to a large extent. They not only enjoy a healthy life but, also improve their quality of life. It lowers stress and anxiety levels, improves mood, increases concentration and boosts self-confidence. Studies have also found reduced death rates among heart attack patients when they follow strict exercise regimes.

30 Minutes of Exercise

Experts believe, 30 minutes of any physical activity every day or at least 5 days a week is a must to maintain good cardiovascular health. Brisk walking, swimming, cycling or any other exercise which can be regularly followed has a positive impact on health.

Numerous studies in recent years have emphasized the importance of physical fitness to maintain good health. With a rapidly increasing obese population, health risks cannot be ignored. As a result, efforts must be made to maintain optimum fitness levels. Physically unfit people pay a price for their lifestyle and are often diagnosed with chronic illnesses later in life.
