Female Radiologists Tend To Make Fewer Image Reporting Mistakes Than Men

Radiology is a specialized field where female participation has remained low for ages. However, contrary to the common belief, women seem to perform more flawlessly than male rads when it comes to reporting accuracy. A recent study has revealed certain facts that can boost women’s participation rate in the field of radiology.

Radiology- A Male-Dominated Field

There is no doubt that radiology, much like several other medical care fields, is a male-dominated lateral. However, studies have revealed that women are more error-free radiologists than men.

According to recent research, women radiologists commit way fewer errors than their male counterparts. This outcome might encourage more women to step into the arena of radiology, conventionally considered as a male-dominated one.

Enhanced participation of women in this field will also reduce the existing gender disparity.

Women In Radiology

Experts at JACR explained that almost 30% of the radiologists are women at present. However, they receive almost 33% less than their male counterparts. This data suggests the amount of gender discrimination and stereotype that dominates this speciality field to date.

Consequently, women do not see this field of work as a potential one for them. Fewer role models are available for the aspirants as overall women’s participation in radiology is not substantial. All these facts have made up the widely accepted notion that women are not ideal for radiology.

The Existing Scenario

Paula Alcaide-Leon is an assistant professor and an MD at the University Of Toronto. The Department Of Medical Imaging of the University of Toronto has recently carried out a study and has published its findings under Paula’s leadership. According to this data, female radiologists tend to commit fewer mistakes than male rads.

So far as the clinical accuracy of the reports remains concerned, female rads appear to be more flawless at any time. The female gender has a tendency of abiding by the guidelines laid down for any task. The team suggested that this tendency can be one of the reasons why women commit lesser errors than men.

The team of researchers also expressed their hope by stating that their result could encourage more women to become rads and reduce the gender imbalance of this domain.

They further added that health care institutions should make the working environment more suitable for female radiologists to attract more to join and to retain the existing ones. With a higher share of female radiologists in the workforce, the institution’s performance will become more flawless.

The Study

The team of researchers in this study chose the time between 2013 and 2019 for their research. The team inspected and evaluated the reporting cases of male and female radiologists during this time. The sample included almost 213 radiologists. 36% of these radiologists were women. All the radiologists were working at European teleradiology providers of good reputation.

The Outcomes

The study revealed that female radiologists enjoyed a limited scope of practice compared to their male counterparts. In most cases, the women rads did not get the opportunity to report on a variety of specialties much like the male ones. However, the team could not come up with a satisfactory explanation for such a skewed distribution of work and opportunities.

Finally, the team concluded that such trends could be a result of the typical teleradiology workflow. The research team also found that second opinion requests are more general in the case of female radiologists’ reports. The extent of multivariate analysis also depended largely on gender aspects.

Keeping all the aspects in mind, the researchers concluded that radiology practices are different for men and women. Alcaide-Leon and team also suggested that given the existing disparities, women may find more specialized radiology practices further suitable for them.
