Female Radiologists And Physicians Earn 33% Less Than What A Male Practitioner Does

Regardless of the field of work chosen, wage pay disparity exists between male and female workers, the medical practices field is also not an exception. Despite the rapidly progressing socio-economic dynamism, some practices have remained unaltered and need attention.

Wage disparity between men and women offering identical services is one of them. Keeping the same in mind, Medscape conducted a survey taking a diverse sample in 2020.

The Survey

The survey conducted by Medscape included 17,903 female physicians practising in the U.S. The time frame within which the survey took place was between October 2020 and February 2021. The survey covered more than 29 fields of specialities. Of these, almost 4% of the respondents belonged to the field of radiology.

Medscape’s Survey Outcomes

Medscape’s latest survey on the payouts received by male and female medical practitioners has brought out astounding realities. According to their reports, compared to the male radiologists, physicians, specialists, etc., earn more than their female counterparts. To be precise, the female practitioners typically earn 33% less than the male practitioners.

The wage pay disparity is widespread and perceptible. As mentioned by health news outlets, the women practitioners get $283,000 compared to the male practitioners with take-home pay of $376,000. These numbers distinctly show the extent of wage pay disparity that exists in the medical field as well.

Last year, this gap was around 31%. Therefore, the latest results, showing almost a 35% gap stands in line with the earlier findings.

According to the report written by Medscape’s Business Medicine wing’s senior director Leslie Kane and the project’s editorial consultant, Mary Lyn Koval, amidst the pandemic, every aspect of the medical field got altered minus the wage pay disparity.

Women practitioners continue to get a considerably lower payoff for the same services compared to their male counterparts. This is one lateral which the pandemic has failed to change.

However, the income of almost two-thirds of the male and female physicians has not gone down considerably during the pandemic in 2020. After the pandemic, many male and female physicians and radiologists had to start their careers freshly.

While 93% of the radiologists confirmed that they would choose the same course of services once more, 75% of the female physicians intended to return to their old practices as well.

The fields like gynecology, pediatrics, etc., have always been female-dominated areas. However, this section makes for only one-fifth of the highest-paid specialists. Among the highest-paid practitioners come plastic surgeons (20%), radiologists (22%), cardiologists (14), and general surgeons (20%).
